2023 Mayor's Vineyard Shiraz

Growing Conditions

A cooler and wetter than average season due to an extended La Nina pattern provided a challenging growing season for all, yet the best vineyards still shone through. With the cooler conditions in Spring, budburst was delayed considerably, combined with substantial rain this proved challenging for many growers and required a change in tactics over the growing season. Good vineyard management saw the Knappstein Vineyards picked starting in early March, with the last grapes harvested in the middle of April.

Vineyard

Situated at just over 500m in altitude, the vines of The Mayors Vineyard, in the North East of the Clare Valley provide the fruit for this single vineyard wine. The 54 year old vines were hand harvested and individual blocks kept separate through vinification. The vineyards soils of red loam are dotted with slate and have long produced Shiraz displaying a wonderful balance between savoury aspects and fruit purity.
